(ORDO NEWS) — The American space agency on October 26 will provide information about a new discovery, about which only one thing is known – that it concerns the moon. Scientists were intrigued and decided to take a pause.
The discovery was made thanks to the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), which is by far the largest in the world. It is based on a modified Boeing 747SP with a reflector telescope.
SOFIA is no ordinary telescope as it soars at an altitude of 11 kilometers. This is over 99% of the atmosphere blocking infrared waves. This makes it possible to explore the universe in infrared light.
The observatory has previously helped find oxygen on Mars, the first molecular bond in space, and numerous infrared measurements, through which astronomers have detected exoplanet collisions, central regions of galaxies and other objects. The device also delighted scientists with a clear image of the Milky Way.
Once again, the work of the observatory was aimed at studying the natural satellite of the Earth. The new discovery was announced by Nasim Rangwal and Jacob Blitter. The first is at NASA‘s Ames Research Center, while the second is at NASA’s Flight Research and Operations Directorate.
It is known that the discovery is associated with the Artemis program, within which it is planned to poison people to the moon in 2024. This is the start for a larger program – human visits to Mars in the 2030s.
The details of the “exciting discovery” will be announced very soon. Many amateur astronomers are looking forward to the news.
