(ORDO NEWS) — The US X-59 supersonic experimental aircraft, designed to evaluate the creation of supersonic passenger transport, is entering independent small-scale model testing, which NASA will conduct in parallel with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
If all goes according to plan, the date of the first flight will be announced, which is expected to take place at the end of this year.
NASA will then conduct acoustic test flights in 2023, followed by scheduled flights over populated areas in early 2024 to assess “how the public perceives the quiet noise of the X-59.”
After that, “NASA plans to present the results of flights over populated areas to the International Civil Aviation Organization and the Federal Aviation Administration in 2027.”
This is stated in the message of the space agency. And regulators will be able to decide whether changes should be made to the rules banning supersonic flights over populated areas.
