(ORDO NEWS) — NASA announced the search for developers of dry closets and waste processing systems for expeditions to Mars and the deployment of these systems directly on the planet.
The agency has announced a competition in which any participant 18 years of age and older, from any jurisdiction that is not under US federal sanctions, will be able to take part in it.
According to the requirements, it is necessary to come up with the idea of a toilet and a system for recycling both the life of astronauts and other biological waste, the utilization of carbon dioxide and inorganic debris into basic materials and other useful things, such as fuel or raw materials for 3D printing.
Ideas are accepted until March 15, and winners will be announced by April 22 and will receive $1,000 each.
“The challenge is to find ways to convert waste into base materials and other useful things, such as fuel or raw materials for 3D printing.
The challenge is to figure out how to convert various wastes into fuels and other useful materials, which can then be turned into useful things and recycled many times over.
Although a perfectly efficient cycle is unlikely, the desired solution should lead to waste minimization,” the competition website says.
