NASA has found the culprit of the failure of one of the tools of the telescope “James Webb”
(ORDO NEWS) — On January 15, 2023, the NIRISS (Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph) instrument malfunctioned.
Because of what, NASA experts were going to cancel all planned observations for an indefinite time. But after the cause of the breakdown was identified and remote repairs were carried out, the problem was solved.
According to a NASA report, the NIRISS instrument was adversely affected by a stream of powerful high-energy cosmic radiation that comes into the solar system from beyond its limits.
The US space agency engineers sent the telescope a command to reset the NIRISS instrument, which led to a positive result and it returned to normal operation again.
The NIRISS scientific instrument, designed and built by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), is able to act as a camera when the other instruments of the newest telescope are busy.
NIRISS can also analyze light signatures to study the atmospheres of small exoplanets, create high-contrast images, and has a special mode designed to search for distant galaxies.
