(ORDO NEWS) — In 1992, during excavations in the Roman fort of Northumberland, archaeologists found a strange object.
Then they decided that it was some kind of sewing device. But after some time, scientists reconsidered its purpose. It turned out to be a sex toy!
Scientists today think that the roughly 2,000-year-old artifact is a dildo. Its dimensions are approximately the same as the male genital organ, and the shape is similar.
So far, it’s safe to say that it was definitely not a sewing device! That’s how archaeologists described it when they found it.
Rob Collins, senior lecturer in archeology at Newcastle University, says he is 100% sure it was a sex toy.
He does not know why the artifact is listed as a corkscrew in the museum catalog. Perhaps a person was simply ashamed to write about such a thing.
The ancient Romans were a rather loose people in many spheres of life, including sex.
On the frescoes and mosaics of the era of Ancient Rome, 2-3 dimensional images of male dignity in an erect state have been found many times.
During the excavations, decorations in the shape of genitals were also discovered. The Romans liked to depict naked bodies, and there are many references to the orgies of many emperors.
The length of the phallus, which lies in the museum, is 16 cm. It is assumed that it was much longer, but part of it has not survived to this day.
The object is made of wood. It is known that it was discovered accidentally during excavations in a ditch with shoes and clothing accessories.
Scientists believed that it was used not only for carnal pleasures. Perhaps it was an instrument of torture or a pestle for culinary purposes (which is hardly believed).
