(ORDO NEWS) — It was April 1561 when all the inhabitants of Nuremberg, Germany came out of their homes to explore the mysterious lights and loud sounds.
They watched the sky, watching with awe and fear what seemed to be a dogfight, all in broad daylight in the early morning.
This event reportedly lasted for about an hour, and the artist Hans Glaser documented this strange event for the German newspaper Nuremberg Herald.
Describing the event, he mentions crosses, pipes, wheels, colorful objects and globes over the city.
There were hundreds of them. Objects disappeared in smoke, some even crashed into the ground. The smoke was visible for miles.
This image and description have been asking for explanations for centuries. What can explain these phenomena, which, it would seem, were witnessed by many people?
What happened in Nuremberg?
Some would attribute all this to the appearance of meteors or comets, even to other natural phenomena, but the uniqueness of the Nuremberg incident precludes such interpretations.
The detailed description given by Glaser does not fit into any natural causes:
“…a terrible phenomenon filled the morning sky with cylindrical shapes, from which came out black, red, orange and blue-white spheres that swirled around. Blood-colored crosses were visible between the spheres. This terrible spectacle was observed by “many men and women.” After that, a black spear-like object appeared. The author of the newspaper warned that “God-fearing people will by no means discard these signs, but will take them to heart as a warning from the merciful Heavenly Father, correct their lives and will faithfully pray to God to turn His wrath away from us, including the deserved punishment, so that we could, temporarily here and forever there, live as His children” – excerpt from the Nuremberg Gazette.
Cylinders, crosses and a black spear-like object appearing in the sky are what one can imagine during modern air combat, but not what happened half a millennium ago!
A few years later, in 1566, another similar event took place in Basel, Switzerland, but this time it was about black balloons in a dogfight over the city. This event was also recorded at that time in the city bulletin.
Another similar event took place in 1697 in Hamburg, Germany, where a crowd watched two huge glowing wheels in the sky above the city.
