(ORDO NEWS) — Today, the percentage of people living in urban areas has risen to over 55% and is expected to reach 68% by 2050.
Thanks to this trend, many of the world‘s largest cities have become home to tens of millions of people each.
In response to such incredible population densities, governments, businesses, and households have installed countless security cameras for a variety of purposes, including crime protection.
The above visualization uses a Comparitech report to identify the most controlled cities in the world.
The first four places belong to India (and not China, as you might think), which is the second largest country in the world in terms of population.
Surveillance cameras play an important role in government efforts to reduce crimes against women.
On the other hand, IHS Markit estimates that there are over 1 billion surveillance cameras installed worldwide as of 2021.
The firm also estimates that 54% of these cameras are in China.
Due to classified information, it is impossible to determine exactly how many cameras each Chinese city actually has.
However, if we assume that there are 540 million cameras in China and divide this by its population of 1.46 billion, we can reasonably say that there are 373 cameras per 1,000 people.
