Most effective treatment for depression discovered
(ORDO NEWS) — The results of a new study conducted by the staff of CAMH (Center for Addiction and Mental Health) showed that the most effective method of dealing with depression is pharmacogenetic testing.
Experts from the Center for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH, Canada) have found that pharmacogenetic testing is more effective for depression than conventional therapy. All results were published in the scientific journal Translational Psychiatry.
Specialists observed 276 patients with depression for 52 weeks. All subjects were diagnosed with treatment-resistant depression (meaning that their condition did not improve after taking at least two antidepressants).
It turned out that remission (recovery) occurred 89 percent more often in those who took drugs in accordance with the results of pharmacogenetic testing.
In general, pharmacogenetics is based on the assumption that each person metabolizes drugs differently depending on their genetic profile.
To determine this profile, a swab is taken from the mouth. After that, the necessary drugs and their doses are selected.
Similar testing also helped Kara Sweeney, a lawyer from Toronto. She needed medication for anxiety and depression.
The results of the test showed that her body would be able to absorb the higher dose of the antidepressant. After increasing the dose for two months, the patient’s mood improved significantly.
