(ORDO NEWS) — According to the South China Morning Post, Chinese scientists plan to send monkeys to their Tiangong space station to conduct a series of experiments in which the animals will mate and possibly reproduce.
This fascinating experiment, which could have major implications for human space colonization, could answer the question: Can mammals successfully reproduce outside of Earth?
According to the report, the experiment will take place in the station’s largest science module, called Wentian.
After studying the behavior of smaller creatures, “there will be some studies involving mice and macaques to see how they grow or even reproduce in space,” said Zhang Lu, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.
He is quoted by the South China Morning Post: “These experiments will help improve our understanding of organism adaptation to microgravity and other space environments.”
