(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from the Universities of Warwick and Birmingham have found that monkeys and humans have the same mind-altering tendencies.
A study shows that these animals intentionally spin around to make themselves dizzy and escape from reality.
The authors believe that any culture has always had its own way of escaping reality through special rituals, practices or ceremonies.
The search for altered states of mind is common to all people, which leads experts to the assumption that this trait was inherited from ancestors in the process of evolution.
To prove this, the researchers analyzed 40 videos of primates spinning their bodies.
It turned out that gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans rotated on average 5.5 times per set at an approximate speed of 1.5 revolutions per second, and the average number of approaches was about three.
The speed of rotation at the same time resembled that used by Muslim dervishes to achieve a state of trance.
However, when attempting to fully replicate the circling process of the great apes, the team found it difficult to achieve the third set of spins at the speed of the primates.
At this stage, the monkeys became visibly dizzy, lost their balance and fell. This indicates that the primates deliberately keep spinning, despite feeling dizzy, until they can no longer balance.
It is emphasized that such actions change the state of consciousness, disrupt the reaction and coordination of the body and mind, which causes nausea, dizziness and high spirits.
However, further research is needed to understand the reasons for this behavior of human ancestors.
