(ORDO NEWS) — The freighter, which has been on fire in the mid-Atlantic since last week, is reported to be carrying about 4,000 vehicles worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
This is how hundreds of millions of dollars burn. And you thought that the spectacle would be more impressive?
The Russell Group has published an assessment of the Felicity Ace cargo ship, which carries vehicles worth about $400 million across the Atlantic. Most of the cargo is luxury cars from Porsche, Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini.
The ship caught fire near the Azores, about 1,500 kilometers west of Portugal, last Wednesday as it sailed from Emden, Germany, to Davisville, Rhode Island. The crew of 22 was safely evacuated shortly after the fire started.
These beauties are now burning in the Atlantic. Might be in good hands
The operator of Felicity Ace, Singapore-based MOL Ship Management, said on Monday that he believes the ship is still on fire five days later. Fire boats are currently on their way to the scene and will arrive on the ship this week.
The fire was reportedly caused by lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles on board the vessel. A failure of one of the batteries could also have caused the fire, but this information has yet to be confirmed.
Lithium-ion batteries have been of increasing concern lately due to their tendency to explode. Remember the few incidents where Samsung tablet batteries exploded and injured a few people? What is there, even the iPhone explodes.

To reduce the risk of an explosion, scientists have already developed several promising technologies. One is to increase the nickel concentration in the cathode of the battery, and the other is to prevent the formation of lithium filaments inside the battery.
