Milky Way has a unique feature
(ORDO NEWS) — An international team of astronomers, as part of the IllustrisTNG project, has identified a unique feature in the Milky Way.
In the process, the authors conducted computer simulations, which revealed that the Milky Way turned out to be too large for its “cosmological wall” (cosmological wall) – a complex of galaxies, which is a flattened analogue of a galactic filament.
This structure, located between two voids (space voids), affects the fact that the Milky Way and nearby galaxies rotate around their axes in a more organized manner.
As a rule, galaxies are much smaller than the “cosmological wall”. Only a millionth of all the galaxies in the simulation were as massive as the Milky Way. Now scientists will have to take this data into account when conducting new studies.
In May 2022, the European Southern Observatory (ESO), in collaboration with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), published the first-ever photograph of a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy.
The hypothesis of the existence of such an object in the center of the galaxy was put forward at the end of the 20th century, when astronomers noticed the strange movement of stars, in 2020 the Nobel Prize was awarded for this discovery.
