(ORDO NEWS) — Researchers at Yamagata University have found that lack of sexual interest is a risk factor for all-cause mortality in Japanese men over 40.
The study involved 20,969 people (8,558 men and 12,411 women) aged 40 and over. Participants underwent annual medical examinations in Yamagata Prefecture. Sexual interest was assessed using questionnaires.
During the observation period (about seven years), 503 people died. 67 deaths were related to cardiovascular disease, 162 to cancer.
Statistical analysis showed that all-cause mortality and cancer mortality were significantly higher among men who lacked sexual interest. For women, no such relationship was observed.
The authors also took into account the age, presence of arterial hypertension, diabetes, smoking, obesity, as well as the level of education of the participants, their marital status and stress levels.
The study will more effectively identify men at risk. Given the homogeneity of the ethnic background of the people in this study, its results cannot be generalized to other groups without cross-checking.
