(ORDO NEWS) — Spanish and British researchers have found that the Mediterranean diet provides even more health benefits when combined with the Mediterranean lifestyle.
There is strong evidence that the Mediterranean diet protects against cardiovascular disease.
However, its impact can even be enhanced by combining healthy food choices with other healthy habits that are typical of the Mediterranean region, such as afternoon naps and socializing.
Basically, this way of life is led by the inhabitants of the Mediterranean, and there is little information about its beneficial effects on the inhabitants of other regions of our planet.
Therefore, researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain) and the University of Oxford (UK) studied the impact of Mediterranean habits on mortality from cardiovascular disease, cancer or any other cause in 110,799 healthy Britons aged 40 to 75 years.
All participants registered with the British Biobank between 2009 and 2012, so their health was tracked for an average of nine years.
To assess participants’ adherence to the Mediterranean lifestyle, scientists used a 25-point MEDLIFE index and a questionnaire with questions about eating habits, physical activity, communication with family and friends, sleep, and so on.
It turned out that people whose lifestyle most closely resembled the habits of the inhabitants of the Mediterranean (including leisurely meals, frequent communication with family and friends, regular physical activity, sound sleep, and so on) were 28-29 percent less likely to suffer from cancer and heart disease. vascular diseases.
Curiously, the risk of death from cancer was reduced by all aspects of the “Mediterranean” life (diet, physical activity, sociability), and from cardiovascular diseases – mainly those that were not related to nutrition.
Thus, as the researchers reported at the American Heart Association conference, not only healthy eating, but also other habits of the inhabitants of the Mediterranean can be beneficial for all people.
