(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison unexpectedly discovered that meditation has amazing therapeutic properties.
Studies have shown the effect of meditation on gene expression and a number of positive changes at the molecular level.
During the experiment, participants were divided into two groups and compared people tested in meditation with a second group of untrained people who simply did nothing.
Scientists claim that before the study, there were no differences between these groups.
After eight hours, a group of experienced meditators showed a number of changes at the genetic and molecular levels.
Among other things, there was a change in the level of the regulatory gene and a decrease in the level of genes that affect pro-inflammatory processes in the body.
Positive effects were seen only in a group of experienced meditators. Other rodent and human studies have shown dynamic epigenetic responses to physical stimuli such as stress, diet, or exercise.
However, it turns out that our peace of mind can have a potential impact on gene expression.
Study author Richard J. Davidson was very surprised to learn that changes were observed in genes that target anti-inflammatory and pain medications.
“To our knowledge, this is the first paper that shows rapid changes in gene expression in subjects associated with the practice of mindfulness meditation,” said Richard J.
Previous research has also shown meditation techniques to be beneficial for inflammatory conditions and have even been endorsed by the American Heart Association as a preventive measure.
