(ORDO NEWS) — An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has been reported in northeastern Namibia.
This was reported on Saturday by the Xinhua news agency, citing the country’s chief veterinarian, Albertina Shilongo.
According to her, the territory of the entire Zambezi district has been declared a zone of infection.
It introduced a temporary ban on the movement of artiodactyl animals. Shilongo said the FMD vaccination of cattle will begin next week.
Foot and mouth disease is an acute infectious disease that affects large and small cattle, buffaloes, horses and pigs.
It is characterized by fever and aphthous lesions of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, skin of the udder and limbs.
It can be transmitted to humans through thermally unprocessed foods and in the process of caring for animals.
