May 2020 became the wettest in Chicago in 150 years

(ORDO NEWS) — After a week of continuous heavy rainfall, Chicago set a record on Tuesday, May 19, 2020, for the wettest May in city history.

According to the National Meteorological Service (NWS), 2.79 mm (0.11 in) of precipitation was recorded at O’Hare Airport overnight, which pushed the city’s May rainfall to 210.8 mm (8.3 in) – this exceeded the previous a record of 209.55 (8.25 inches) set in 2019.

“May 2020 is now the wettest in 150 years of official rainfall observations here – and the month is not over yet,” said American meteorologist Tom Skilling. “We will add to the total rainfall for the month.”

The new record also marks three consecutive years of record rainfall in the month of May.
