Mars rover Zhurong prepares for wintering on the Red Planet

(ORDO NEWS) — The PRC rover operates in the vast basin of the Utopia Plain for 347 Martian days. During this time, he covered a distance of 1921 meters exploring the surface of Mars, according to an update published on May 6, 2022.

However, the rover is now getting less power from the sun as winter has arrived in the northern hemisphere of Mars.

To compensate for the energy drain, the Zhurong rover’s engineering team adjusted the angle of the solar panels to maximize sunlight and shorten the rover’s operating time.

Zhurong will now sleep longer. The coldest period in the area where the PRC rover operates is expected to come in July.
