(ORDO NEWS) — The Perseverance rover travels faster than any previous rover. How fast, you ask? Its actual speed is almost 160 meters per hour.
The rover devotes several hours a day to traveling over very smooth terrain. This allowed Perseverance to break the records of previous rovers for distance traveled in one day, now it stands at 319.8 meters, a distance traveled by sol 351.
The Curiosity rover has made several trips over 100 meters, but none over 200 meters. This was partly due to the more rocky terrain.
Like Perseverance, Opportunity, which landed back in 2004, had some very smooth patches of terrain that allowed it to once cover up to 228 meters in a single day using solar power just a year after it landed.
Overall, it’s not just the trip that matters; it is a complex process that requires enough energy and time per day. Persistence seems to have it all. In one week he walked about 1.5 km. As of Friday, March 25, 2022, which was sol 389, Perseverance has traveled a total of 6.6 km.
We must admit that we were much more pessimistic. Over the years, we’ve seen a lot of unexpected situations that have plagued rovers, so we’ve tended to expect the unexpected with a “wait and see” attitude towards new advances.
So now we’re really excited to see Perseverance make this trip. In terms of the total distance traveled by Perseverance, if he wants to catch up with Opportunity (45km) or Curiosity (over 27km), he still has a lot of trips to go. But we believe the Persistence will eventually out-range these other rovers, but we’ll have to wait and see.
