(ORDO NEWS) — A Brazilian man was found alive five hours after doctors at the Goiás state hospital mistakenly pronounced him dead and sent him to the morgue in a body bag.
Doctors pronounced 62-year-old José Ribeiro da Silva dead on November 29. The official cause of death was complications from oral cancer.
The news of the man’s death was reported to his sister at about eight o’clock in the evening. The family was handed over the death certificate and the body of the deceased.
Da Silva was packed in a body bag and sent to a funeral home 100 kilometers from the hospital, in the municipality of Rialma.
At one in the morning the next day, a bureau employee opened the bag and saw that the man was alive: the eyes of the “dead man” were open, and he was breathing, albeit with difficulty.
An ambulance was called to the scene and rushed da Silva back to the hospital.
“It’s incredible. My brother spent five hours in a plastic bag,” said the man’s sister, Aparecida. She called the situation “completely unacceptable” and wrote a statement to the police.
It later emerged that one of Da Silva’s doctors noticed that he was barely breathing and pronounced him dead.
In fact, all this time the man was breathing through a tracheostomy tube that was inserted into his throat. Local authorities launched an investigation into the incident.
Earlier it was reported that an elderly resident of the Chinese city of Shanghai, infected with COVID-19, was mistakenly declared dead and taken to the morgue in a body bag.
Video footage taken by a passerby shows the moment when a man suddenly sticks his head out of a bag being unloaded from a hearse.
