(ORDO NEWS) — Former US Navy Commander Joseph Dituri, 55, lives underwater for 100 days to find out what effect underwater life has on the human body.
The former US Navy commander began his mission to spend 100 days living underwater in isolation, just to see what happens.
Joseph Dituri currently resides in a former marine research lab that was converted into an underwater hotel in 1986 off the Florida Keys.
He plans to live and work in Jules’ underwater house until June 9, and in doing so, he will break all records of underwater human habitation at atmospheric pressure.
Dituri holds a PhD in biomedical engineering and teaches hyperbaric medicine. While there, he also plans to educate students and conduct medical and marine scientific research.
The previous record for a person to stay underwater (73 days) was set in 2014 in Jules by two professors from the University of Tennessee.
“This is more about encouraging the next generation of children to come here to learn how to conserve, protect and rejuvenate the marine environment.”
He also told one commenter that when you’re underwater, you need to “pee more quickly and for much longer.”
The man plans to teach online high school and college classes in hyperbaric medicine and is going to meet about 40 young divers who will spend 24 hours underwater with him to become certified aquanauts.
Much of the research will focus on hyperbaric medicine, which delivers oxygen at elevated pressure to treat conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning and infections that deprive tissues of oxygen.
