(ORDO NEWS) — A Chinese man who secretly received a 10 million yuan lottery win from his wife for two years has been sentenced by a court to pay her compensation.
In 2021, China‘s Zhou won a 10 million yuan prize in the lottery. After paying the mandatory tax, he was left with $8.43 million.
However, instead of sharing the wonderful news with his wife, he reportedly continued to act as if nothing had happened.
On the day that the lottery winnings were transferred to his bank account, Zhou transferred 2 million yuan to his sister and another 700,000 yuan to his ex-wife to help her buy an apartment.
He did not report the lottery win to his wife for two years.
It is not clear how Zhou’s wife found out about his deceit, but the moment she did, she filed for divorce and also sued him for her share of the lottery prize.
Since they were married at the time of the win, the money is considered joint property of both spouses, but because Zhou went to great lengths to hide the win from his wife, she actually asked for two-thirds of the 2.7 million yuan he sent to his sister and ex-wife without her consent.
On February 1, a Wenzhou court granted the woman’s request for 60 percent of the hidden winnings, and so far neither party has filed an appeal against this decision.
The story has gone viral on Chinese social media, with the vast majority of people blaming Zhou for keeping his wife in the dark for so long.
“He used the couple’s common property to buy a lottery ticket and won the grand prize. He wanted to enjoy it alone?” – Asked one of the netizens.
By the way, this is not a unique case. Just last November, we wrote about another Chinese man who won his lottery prize by wearing a mask to keep it a secret from his wife and children.
But his motivation was somewhat different.
