(ORDO NEWS) — A man who underwent surgery to remove a tumor became almost half a meter taller. According to Birmingham Live, education blocked the parts of the brain responsible for growth.
Jamie Connolly from Australia in his teens was very short for a long time – only 125 centimeters. He always believed that the reason for the late onset of puberty.
However, after a sudden epileptic seizure at the age of 16, it turned out that there was a more serious reason behind the delay in physical development.
All this time, a slowly growing tumor developed in Connolly’s brain, inhibiting its development and growth. The young man underwent an operation, after which he grew 45 centimeters at once in a few months.
Subsequently, he underwent three more surgical interventions, now the growth of 35-year-old Connolly is 170 centimeters.
A small part of the tumor still remains in Jamie’s brain, but it only affects his vision – he is forced to wear glasses. Otherwise, the current state allows him to live a normal life and work as a psychologist’s assistant.
“Despite multiple surgeries to remove the tumor, it has affected my vision and I need to wear glasses.
Part of the tumor is still in my brain because complete removal could lead to paralysis and leave me immobilized.” – Jamie Connolly.
Connolly’s tumor is benign and is called an astrocytoma. It is formed during the growth of astrocytes – cells that support neurons.
Astrocytoma can appear at any age. This is the most common type of tumor among neuroectodermal.
Scientists have previously found that tall people may be at increased risk of nerve damage, as well as skin and bone infections.
Although tall stature is not generally considered a risk factor for disease, it is nonetheless associated with numerous diseases.
