(ORDO NEWS) — The launch of the Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket with a new spacecraft will be carried out from the site of the Kennedy Space Center LC-39A. As part of its mission, Crew Dragon will go to the ISS. On board will be two crew members: Douglas Hurley and Bob Benken. These are experienced astronauts who have previously completed several space flights.
The upcoming launch of Crew Dragon will open a new page in the history of American astronautics: the launch will be the first manned for the United States since the closure of the Space Shuttle program in 2011. Since then, American astronauts flew to the ISS on Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
Recall that the very first flight of Crew Dragon performed in crewless mode on March 2, 2019: then the spacecraft docked with the ISS and successfully returned to Earth. Note also that the earlier mission SpaceX the DM-2 were planning to implement in July 2019 the first, but in the way of SpaceX got an accident, which took place in April last year. Then, as a result of the explosion, the Crew Dragon capsule completely collapsed.
