Kurds agree to ceasefire to counter coronavirus

US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Kurdish forces in the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) coalition agreed to a ceasefire in order to focus all efforts on combating the spread of coronavirus.

“The SDS command is inviting all parties to the Syrian conflict to support the initiative of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and to cease fire everywhere,” said a statement transmitted by Al Hadath.

The administrative head of the international community called for a ceasefire in all armed conflicts on Monday amid a coronavirus pandemic in his speech. The SDF hopes that the humanitarian truce “will pave the way for dialogue and a political process that will lead to the end of the war throughout Syria.”

SDF units are conducting military operations against the Turkish troops and armed groups of the Syrian opposition, which occupied the Afrin region in 2018, 65 km from Aleppo.

In addition, Kurdish fighters make armed attacks in the north of the provinces of Rakka and Hasek, where Ankara created a security zone along the border with Syria.

Syrian Health Minister Nizar Yaziji said Sunday about the country’s first coronavirus infection. The government of the Arab Republic on Saturday decided to suspend the operation of most state institutions from March 23 until a special order from the authorities in connection with the threat of the spread of coronavirus.

According to SANA, all public and private sector enterprises will be stopped, except for vital facilities and companies that produce food products and medicines.
