(ORDO NEWS) — An exoplanet with Jupiter-like characteristics was discovered in old data collected by NASA‘s Kepler space telescope in 2016.
The newly analyzed data show that the discovered exoplanet is 17,000 light-years from Earth. It has almost the same mass as Jupiter, it is in a similar orbit with respect to its star.
The planet is “one of Jupiter’s closest relatives among those planets that have been discovered so far,” said Eamonn Kerins, one of the authors of the new study.
“New Jupiter” is twice as far from Earth as any other exoplanet discovered by the Kepler space telescope.
