(ORDO NEWS) — Research files of scientists from Kyoto University disappeared due to an error in the backup system of the Hewlett-Packard supercomputer.
An error in the backup system resulted in the loss of 77 terabytes of data from a supercomputer installed at Kyoto University in Japan. This was reported by the Internet publication in the field of information security Bleeping Computer.
The incident occurred in mid-December, but information about the loss of 34 million files was published by the university only on December 30. It is not possible to return data for 14 user groups. One part was copied according to the old script, the other – according to the new one.
The backup process is currently suspended. In January, they promised to reconfigure the algorithm. The university conducts research in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, pharmacology and immunology.
Digital corporations don’t stop working on quantum computers. Earlier it was reported that in 2019 Google, using the Sycamore quantum processor, consisting of 54 qubits, completed a task in 200 seconds that would take ordinary machines about 10 thousand years.
The second machine to achieve quantum supremacy was the Chinese Jiuzhang processor, which in 200 seconds completed a task that the most powerful modern computers would have spent 1.5 billion years on.
