(ORDO NEWS) — The world‘s first train-bus hybrid was launched in the city of Kayo, Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku Island in Japan. He can travel both on roads and on rails, writes The Japan Times.
The DMV dual-mode vehicle looks like a bus with retractable railroad wheels at the front. As the newspaper writes, when this transport approaches the railway, its driver lowers the railway wheels, which takes 15 seconds. In this case, the front car wheels are raised and do not touch the rails, and the rear wheels go along them.
The DMV is diesel-fueled and has a capacity of 21 passengers. Its speed is 60 km / h by rail and about 100 km / h by highway.
It took almost 10 years to develop the DMV, said Shigeki Miura, Mayor of Kayo and president of Asia Coast Railway Co., which funded the development of the DMV, at the launch of the new vehicle.
The developers and authorities of the prefecture expressed the hope that the new vehicle will not only attract tourists, but also facilitate movement for the elderly, since it can be used both on the highway and by rail.
