(ORDO NEWS) — The latest image from NASA‘s James Webb Space Telescope has been released online. It captures 17 dust rings around a pair of stars that look like a fingerprint.
This star system is known as V1687 Cygnus. Rings form when stars get close enough to each other that their stellar winds merge to form concentric dust circles. This happens every eight years.
“The image also shows how sensitive this telescope is. Previously, we could only see two dust rings with ground-based telescopes. Now we see at least 17 of them, ”the astronomers explained.
