(ORDO NEWS) — The James Webb Space Telescope captured the collision of two large stars that are a billion light years away.
The $10 billion James Webb Telescope launched in December 2021 and is expected to be fully operational by the end of June 2022. The James Webb telescope consists of 18 hexagonal mirror segments connected to form one large mirror just over 6 meters wide.
With a decade or more in orbit, Webb will be used by teams of astronomers to study a wide range of celestial phenomena, from exoplanets to black holes.
Astronomers are confident that it will help them look further into the history of the universe than any space telescope before it, in part because of its position 1.5 million km from Earth.
