(ORDO NEWS) — In Italy, hydropower is an important component of the energy sector: it accounts for 66-68% of all generation from renewable sources domestically. The country ranks IV among the largest hydropower producers in Europe.
For the development of the industry, sometimes it was necessary to resort to forced measures – during the construction of hydroelectric power plants, picturesque landscapes and sometimes ancient settlements were flooded. A similar thing happened to the 12th-century village of Fabrique di Careggine, located in Tuscany, which sank in 1946; residents, of course, were relocated to a neighboring town.
Decently preserved structures appear above the water only during maintenance work on the dam. Since the ghost village sank under water, it has been seen only 4 times: in 1958, 1974, 1983 and 1994. In 1994, more than 1 million tourists came to look at the sunken village in Tuscany. Such an invasion made the local authorities look at the underwater village from the angle of the tourism business.
After 26 years, the lake is planned to be drained again to restore the lost village founded by blacksmiths. Since many structures built in the XII century are still preserved and are not only of historical interest, but also of interest in terms of returning to life a deliberately flooded medieval settlement.
Representatives of an energy company that operates an artificial reservoir have already stated that one of the initiatives being discussed is the reconstruction of the natural environment, including cleaning the reservoir and possibly emptying the pool. The only obstacle may be the fact that today the reservoir acts as a reservoir in case of fire. According to experts, if the lake is really drained in order to restore an interesting object for tourism, then this will become a unique precedent in the history of hydropower.
