US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The escalation of the conflict between Israel and Palestine is causing concern throughout the world. The UN has declared that the parties are moving towards full-scale war and is calling for peace. Turkey sided with the Palestinians, accusing Netanyahu of illegal actions and the death of civilians in the Gaza Strip. What will Ankara do? Turkish experts are answering this question.
Experts, in an interview with Cumhuriyet, commented on the continuing tension between Israel and Palestine, the ongoing violent clashes.
Former Turkish ambassador to Tel Aviv, Oğuz Çelikkol, assessing tensions in the region following an attempt to forcibly evacuate Palestinians from their homes in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem, recalled that Israel had in fact long ago abandoned its conflict settlement policy on the principle of two states and took steps to expand settlements in the West Bank.
Also mentioning that Benjamin Netanyahu was unable to form a government after the elections in Israel, Celikkol noted: “If Netanyahu loses his post as prime minister, he may also lose the party leader’s chair. His political life will come to an end. And Netanyahu is trying to prevent this. He is trying to enlist more support from religious parties and ultragroups.”
Celikkol continued: “The stance of US President Joe Biden in favor of restoring Palestinian confidence worries Netanyahu. So there is also an attempt to send a signal to the United States. Israel needs to be forced to support the two-state solution. In the event of increased pressure from the United States, Israel may be forced to do so. If this does not happen, the reaction of other countries will have no effect on Israel. “
“The Palestinian question was shifted to Turkey”
Professor of the International Relations Department of the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ), Dr. Hüseyin Bağcı, drew attention to the indifferent attitude of the Arab countries towards the Palestinian issue.
Noting that this situation made Turkey the main advocate of the Palestinian cause, Bagci continued: “In essence, this is the problem of the Arabs, but at the moment they have shifted it to Turkey. Turkey’s response to this Israeli policy is fair. However, the Palestinian issue is not a question that Turkey can solve alone, Turkey does not have such an opportunity. ”
“There is no reason to send troops”
The former head of the intelligence department of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces, retired Colonel General Ismail Hakkı Pekin (İsmail Hakkı Pekin) commented on the slogans chanted at the protests in Turkey against Israel’s actions, namely, “Mehmetcik to Palestine”, “Close Kurecik”, and also appeals from some political parties “Turkey should send troops in support of Palestine.”
“These calls are groundless,” Beijing said. – There can be no question of sending troops to Palestine by Turkey. Peacekeeping forces cannot be dispatched without a UN resolution. One of the most important steps that should be taken at the moment for the Arab and Islamic countries is to unite and impose certain sanctions on Israel. Unfortunately, the Arab countries are not in a position to do this.”
