(ORDO NEWS) — We don’t want to scare you, but there is a strong possibility that dark matter could be in the room with you right now and even be passing through your body as you read this.”
“Yes, of course. She’s here,” Yeshiva University researcher Ed Belbruno told Futurism. “Where you sit, you feel on some level that is beyond our senses… this power.”
It makes sense. Dark matter, which scientists have yet to observe or measure directly, is estimated to make up 95 percent of the universe.
With such a ubiquity of the substance, the likelihood that it ended up on Earth, in our homes and bodies, seems high, doesn’t it?
As Belbruno and recently retired NASA Chief Scientist Jim Green told Futurism about their proposal to launch a probe into space to study the mysterious substance, one of the main things we know about dark matter is that it gets smaller the closer we get. towards the Sun, due to the gravitational force of the star itself.
This would be good news for dark matter phobes, although it won’t completely allay their fears. After all, as Belbruno insists, this strange substance is still here with us.
“It’s going through you right now,” Belbruno added. “The only reason it’s not a concern is because the Earth’s gravity is so strong that it drowns it out. It’s noise, but it’s there.” Greene, the more pragmatic half of this strange couple, put it differently.
“Dark matter is probably in our region, probably in and around our solar system,” he said. “It may be in our rooms, but it is in such a low density, at such a low level, that it could not be detected.”
“We don’t suspect that we have dark matter in our midst,” Greene added. “But that doesn’t mean it’s not there at such a low density that the measurements we’re doing in labs haven’t detected it yet.”
Of course, there are a number of theories about where dark matter came from. The leading hypothesis suggests that dark matter was a by-product of the Big Bang, although as Greene and Belbruno noted, some scientists now believe that dark matter may have existed before this primordial bang.
In other words, dark matter, whatever it was, was probably in the room with everyone who lived before you, and will be there long after you are gone. What you do with this knowledge is entirely up to you.
