(ORDO NEWS) — Experts say that constipation can be attributed to those signs that are extremely rare in coronavirus. At the same time, there are some conditions that are directly related to the disease and its treatment. They can cause problems with emptying.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has provided evidence that constipation is a condition in which bowel movements are very infrequent.
Also, during a bowel movement, severe discomfort and even pain can occur. There is some information that links the coronavirus and constipation, but it does not seem convincing enough.
- One of the American journals of gastroenterology published the results of a study conducted in 2020. A man was hospitalized after being infected with the coronavirus, complaining of stomach pain, nausea and constipation. After computed tomography, colonic obstruction was established. Pathology causes the intestinal muscles to not contract.
- The second study was published in the Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infections. The article describes the symptoms of people with coronavirus in Israel. Among them are also nausea, constipation, stomach pain and even vomiting. But at the same time, diarrhea was the most common.
- In 2022, the European Journal of Pharmacology listed the most common drugs for the treatment of coronavirus. among them was the drug Remdesivir, a side effect of which can be constipation.
It is worth noting that in all the situations described, constipation was not the only symptom of coronavirus. In fact, it is very difficult to say whether a virus really causes problems with emptying.
Perhaps this is just an accident, which is often diagnosed in patients who have confirmed COVID-19. John Sellick notes that constipation occurs due to dehydration, and diarrhea is still more characteristic of coronavirus.
