(ORDO NEWS) — The Dutch National Institute of Health (RIVM) has published the results of a study in which they tried to establish how effective a booster dose of a coronavirus vaccine is.
The study was conducted in the Netherlands. It was possible to establish that the booster vaccination is able to protect against Omicron by about 68%.
If you get vaccinated on time, then in this case the risk of infection with the Delta variant decreases by about 76%.
If a person has not previously been ill with a coronavirus and has not been vaccinated, then after infection, the risk of re-illness becomes 78% less.
In the case of Omicron, the risks were 33% after vaccinations, as well as 25% after a person has been ill. After an additional booster dose was given, the protection rate increased to 93% for the Delta strain and 68% for Omicron.
At the same time, experts are trying to establish how long the protective effect of boosters will last. Do not forget also that in the course of the study only one variant of the Omicron strain, BA.1, was studied.
To date, an even more infectious subspecies of Omicron, BA.2, has begun to actively spread around the world. Experts warned that it would soon become the main one in the Netherlands.
Previous studies have already been conducted, with the help of which experts wanted to find out how effective certain vaccines can be in the fight against Omicron.
For example, the work of American experts has shown that mRNA vaccines are 81% effective, and the effect persists for six months after a person receives two vaccinations. Six months later, the figure drops to 57%.
If a booster vaccination is given, this will re-strengthen immunity by 90%.
