US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — India may ease pharmaceutical export restrictions due to pressure from the United States. This was reported on Wednesday by Reuters, citing sources in the Indian government.
“Our government is under very serious pressure. The US is most interested in paracetamol, it is very important for them,” Reuters quoted Indian officials as saying. According to them, restrictions on medicines, including paracetamol, will be eased within two days and in relation to all countries.
According to Reuters, India produces more than a quarter of all generic drugs in the world market. 24% of US medical imports are from India.
In March, the Indian government imposed a number of restrictions on the export of 26 items of pharmaceutical products in order to exclude the possibility of their shortage in the domestic market. Due to these restrictions, Indian companies must obtain permission from the authorities for deliveries abroad.
On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo had a telephone conversation with the Indian Foreign Minister, discussing cooperation in the pharmaceutical field.
