(ORDO NEWS) — India and Russia agreed to strengthen cooperation in the space sector, including human space flight programs and satellite navigation. The two countries also pledged to seek mutually beneficial cooperation in the development of launch vehicles and the peaceful uses of outer space, including planetary exploration.
It was part of a broader agreement reached during the December 6 summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi.
In a joint statement issued after the meeting, India and Russia “welcomed the expansion of cooperation between the state space corporation Roscosmos and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), including in manned space flights, the development of programs and satellite navigation, and agreed to explore the prospects for the development of mutually beneficial cooperation in the development of launch vehicles and the use of outer space for peaceful purposes, including planetary research. ”
The two countries also welcomed the joint activities in the framework of the human space flight program and expressed satisfaction with the training of four Indian astronaut candidates at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Research Center. As part of the Gaganyaan program, India’s first crewed space flight.
The training began in February 2020 in accordance with the June 2019 contract between ISRO and Roscosmos subsidiary Glavkosmos and ended in March 2021. India will select three of the four to be sent into space in 2023 aboard the Gaganyaan, a crewed capsule to be launched on an Indian launch vehicle (GSLV).
“To promote further cooperation in space,” India and Russia signed an agreement on technology protection in connection with cooperation in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes, as well as the creation and operation of launch vehicles and ground-based space infrastructure.
The two countries also agreed to strengthen cooperation within the framework of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including on the long-term sustainability of outer space activities.
