In Turkey, a diver stumbled upon the ruins of an ancient Greek port

(ORDO NEWS) — Off the coast of the Aegean Sea in the Izmir region, US engineer Denem Orhun found the harbor of the ancient city while diving. The man stumbled upon the pillars a year and a half ago, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

It is noted that the diver took pictures of the ruins, and then handed them over to archaeologists. According to NTV, it took experts a year to find out what Denem Orhun discovered.

As experts have established, the engineer found the ruins of the port of the ancient Greek city of Atarney, which was used even before the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.

After the discovery, the area was declared a protected object of the first degree, and the ruins of the port were given the status of “archaeological monument”.

Historians note that Atarney flourished in the 4th century BC. The city fell into disrepair in the 1st century BC, believed to be due to the outbreak of an unknown epidemic.
