(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from the University of British Columbia have proven that a person who is near death and unconscious continues to hear well.
It is believed that hearing is the last of the senses that a person loses when he dies. Scientists have wondered whether the unconscious dying person is really able to hear.
The study involved healthy people, hospice patients who were conscious, as well as the same patients, but already when they were dying. All of them measured the electrical activity in the brain using electroencephalography.
It turned out that even a dying brain can normally respond to sounds when a person is already in an unconscious state.
At the same time, according to scientists, the brain of a dying person reacted to sounds in the same way as the brain of a healthy person. But at the same time, there is still no answer to the question: is a dying person in an unconscious state able to understand what he hears.
“This first glimpse reinforces the idea that we should keep talking to people when they die because something is going on in their brains,” said lead author Elizabeth Bludon.
