(ORDO NEWS) — Archaeologists spoke about the results of excavations in the ancient city of Anemuriy. At the place where the colonnaded street supposedly passed, they found four burials: three adults and one newborn child. The remains of the latter were in a trading amphora.
At the southernmost point of Asia Minor – Cape Anamur, which is located in the Turkish province of Mersin, there are the remains of the ancient city of Anemuriy (Anemurium).
The ruins of this port city, which authentically existed already in the Hellenistic era, occupy an area of about 600 hectares. Anemuriy was abandoned in the 7th century AD.
And only in the 19th century this city was discovered by the British admiral and explorer Francis Beaufort. However, the first excavations in it began much later – in the 1960s.
It is divided into two parts: the lower city and the citadel. Among other things, a necropolis has survived from Anemuriy to the present day, in which there were about 350 burials of the 1st-4th centuries AD, the remains of a large theater for 900 people, churches, a public bath, aqueducts and a lighthouse, as well as perfectly preserved mosaics.
Archaeologists reported on the results of new excavations in the ancient city of Anemuriy led by Professor Mehmet Tekocak from Selçuk University. While working on the site, which is believed to be the colonnaded street, they found human graves.
First, the researchers discovered the remains of a newborn child who was buried in a trading amphora. According to Tekojak, this is the first such burial found in Anmuriya.
This was followed by the finds of three more skeletons, hastily simply buried in the ground. Presumably they could be the remains of the child’s family.
Earlier, three more skeletons (two adults and one child) were found in the area. According to archaeologists, these discoveries are remarkable in that the burials were located outside the necropolis of the ancient city.
Tekojak noted that perhaps there was once a church on this site, which archaeologists still do not know about. Or the burials were made in her garden.
