In Korea, they came up with a smart tattoo to monitor health

(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from South Korea have advanced in research on how to take care of your health and preserve your beauty. So, a new nanoink tattoo becomes a bioelectrode and can work together with medical electronics.

Scientists from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Daejeon, South Korea, have created a smart tattoo based on nano-ink (e-tattoo – electronic tattoo).

The development will help advance new methods of monitoring health indicators. It is noted that various “medical” drawings are made in a non-invasive way.

The South Korean researchers’ ink is made from liquid metal and carbon nanotubes that act as a bioelectrode.

For example, a tattoo, when connected to an electrocardiogram (ECG) device or other biosensor, can send data about a patient’s heart rate and other vital signs (blood sugar levels) to a monitor.

However, in the future, scientists, hoping to improve the invention, want to abandon biosensors. “Someday we hope to connect a wireless chip integrated with this ink so that the tattoo on the body and the user’s device can communicate by sending signals to each other,” said project leader Steve Park, professor of materials science and engineering.

Medicine of the future

The researchers note that the ink is non-invasive and is made from particles based on gallium, a soft, silvery metal that is also used in semiconductors and thermometers; and carbon nanotubes containing platinum help conduct electricity.
