(ORDO NEWS) — After the completion of the award-winning Valley development, another MVRDV project has emerged, featuring an impressive mountain-like appearance.
The Ascension Paysagere has been designed to strict green building standards and features an abundance of greenery even on the façades.
Ascension Paysagere was created in collaboration with co-architect All for the developer Groupe Giboire. It is located at the confluence of two rivers in the west of Rennes, France.
Building area of 8,200 sq. m is distributed over two residential buildings, consisting of eight and 12 floors, respectively, between which there are 138 houses, as well as several commercial areas.
Their exterior is done in five shades of grey, with dark and matte shades closer to the ground that become lighter and glossier with height.
Their stepped shape not only offers an interesting design, but also creates a terrace or balcony space for each apartment. The terraces will also end up overflowing with greenery as the trees continue to grow.
“Ascension Paysagere was inspired by geological formations,” explained MVRDV. “The project includes two curved buildings, one large and one small, with gradually receding slopes.
Near the river and where the project approaches its neighbors, the buildings are low, highlighting the extensive low-rise context.
Elsewhere however, the design gradually rises to three peaks, reaching a maximum height of 12 stories at the center of the site.
The terraces created by these gradual indentations are adorned with pots filled with greenery, extending the lush riverside atmosphere upwards into an apartment even at the very top of the building.”
The 34 apartments, located in a smaller building, are built to Passivhaus’ strict standards.
This means they have fantastic insulation and a high level of airtightness and will maintain a relatively constant temperature all year round, making them very energy efficient and cheap to provide comfort.
Some of the other apartments in the larger building are social housing while others are “affordable” private rentals.
Windows have been carefully positioned to maximize natural light inside and provide excellent ventilation.
