(ORDO NEWS) — Forest fires have destroyed 700,000 hectares of forest in the countries of the European Union (EU), which is an absolute record in the history of observations.
This was stated on Thursday at a briefing in Brussels by the representative of the European Commission Balazs Uivari.
“So far this summer, forest fires have destroyed 700,000 hectares of forest.
The level of support for Europeans is very high: the EU countries have resorted to activating the EU civil defense mechanism nine times, the Community countries have sent 29 aircraft, eight helicopters and 370 firefighters to fight the fire,” he said.
Uivari stressed that the EU is also actively using the Copernicus satellite system to monitor the spread of fires.
