(ORDO NEWS) — In the Chinese city of Chongqing, two people walking down the street suddenly fell into the ground. A surveillance video released in China‘s state media on June 29 shows asphalt collapsing under a couple walking on the sidewalk and trapping them in a sinkhole. According to Metro, the incident itself took place on Monday, June 27th.
Fortunately, both victims survived: they were rescued by local firefighters and taken to hospital. According to the Chinese broadcaster CCTV, the road was closed to traffic until the aftermath of the accident.
CCTV also reports that the failure was most likely driven by heavy rains that have recently hit China for several weeks from Chongqing in the southeast to Shanghai on the east coast.
Earlier, Profile wrote about how the authorities in central China blew up a dam to release a huge amount of water that has accumulated as a result of flooding across the country that claimed the lives of many people. A dam on a river in Anhui province was destroyed. It is noted that this year the water level in many rivers, including the Yangtze, which is one of the largest, has been unusually high due to heavy rains.
