(ORDO NEWS) — The Chengdu, China-based company has been praised for asking job seekers and recruiters to wear masks to avoid discrimination based on appearance.
Chengdu Ant Logistics recently made headlines after a video showing the hiring process went viral on Chinese social media.
A short clip filmed by one of the interviewees shows several masked people waiting to be interviewed by a recruiter who was also reportedly wearing a mask.
The company has since said the video was filmed at a recent biennial job fair and that the masks were introduced to remove appearance-based bias.
The Chinese logistics company said the bizarre hiring method was used to reduce job applicants’ stress levels and to highlight the fact that it values people’s individual abilities over their looks.
The video, which circulated on Chinese social media, received generally positive feedback from millions of people, many of whom said they wouldn’t mind wearing masks when applying for a new job.
“As someone with a social phobia, I would really enjoy an interview like this,” wrote one person on Douyu.
“It’s equality, good looks shouldn’t count,” another person added.
However, there were those who expressed doubts about the authenticity of the explanation offered by the company.
While the video footage was indeed filmed by a real applicant, the masks were allegedly issued to protect people’s identities as the interviews were broadcast live.
Some argue that after the video became popular, Chengdu Ant Logistics simply turned the interview into a publicity stunt, which attracted public attention.
