(ORDO NEWS) — Even if the world adheres to the Paris Agreement, Australia could face deadly heat every year after 2100, according to an article published Aug. 26 in the online scientific journal Communications Earth and Environment.
Tropical regions, including northern Australia, could experience “dangerously high” heat most days of the year, while even cooler latitudes in the rest of the continent would be subject to regular, deadly heatwaves.
The findings suggest that human carbon dioxide emissions could lead to a global increase in exposure to extreme temperatures in the coming decades, even if global warming is limited to 2°C under the Paris Agreement.
The authors of the study found that by 2100, there is only a 0.1% chance of reaching the 1.5 degree Celsius goal set by the Paris Agreement.
