(ORDO NEWS) — In April 2022, a record high concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was recorded on Earth.
This was reported by the specialists of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography (USA) with reference to the data of the Weather Observatory on Mauna Loa (Hawaii), which recorded a record concentration of 420.02 ppm.
The record was later confirmed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which recorded a concentration of 421.33 ppm on May 4.
In 1958, when the Hawaiian station began operation, a concentration of 317.51 shares was recorded there. Carbon dioxide is considered the most important component of greenhouse gases that lead to global warming.
According to NOAA, carbon dioxide is currently accumulating a hundred times faster than in any previous geological epoch.
“It took more than 200 years for the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to rise by 25% and just 30 years for it to be half the pre-industrial level,” explained Simon Lewis of University College London.
The last time the concentration of carbon dioxide slightly exceeded 400 parts about 4 million years ago, when the average temperature was 3 degrees higher than today.
