(ORDO NEWS) — Field Museum: A meteorite weighing 7.6 kilograms was discovered in Antarctica.
An international team of scientists has discovered several meteorites in Antarctica, one of which weighs 7.6 kilograms. The discovery is announced in a press release on Phys.org.
Of the approximately 45,000 meteorites discovered in Antarctica over the past century, only a hundred are large.
Although even tiny micrometeorites are of high scientific value, it is rare to find a meteorite large enough, says Maria Valdez, a researcher at the Field Museum of Natural History and the University of Chicago.
The discovery was made as part of a mission that also included scientists from the Free University of Brussels and ETH Zurich.
They studied potential meteorite impact areas in Antarctica that had been identified using satellite imagery.
A total of five meteorites have been discovered and will be carefully analyzed at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.
The researchers also took sediment samples for analysis, which may contain micrometeorites.
