(ORDO NEWS) — Hyundai has released a video demonstrating the capabilities of an autonomous charging robot (ACR) for electric vehicles created by Hyundai Motor Group.
ACR for electric vehicles is a one-armed robot that can insert the cable into the charging port of an electric vehicle, and then remove it after charging is completed.
A new video shows the Hyundai IONIQ 6 (see below) self-parking at an electric vehicle charging station. After the car stops, ACR uses the camera located inside to determine the exact location and angle to unlock the charging port.
The charging session begins when the robot picks up the charger and attaches it to the car’s charging port. When the charging process is complete, the robot removes the device, puts it back in place, and closes the charging port cover.
“ACR will help make charging electric vehicles easier and more convenient, especially in dark environments.
It will also improve accessibility, especially for people with disabilities, as charging cables become thicker and heavier to enable high-speed charging,” said Dong Jin-hyun, head of the robotics laboratory at Hyundai Motor Group.
When creating the ACR at Hyundai Robotics Lab, various factors were taken into account, including where the car is parked, the design of the charging port, the weather, potential obstructions, and the weight of the charging cable.
Software that can calculate all of these variables at the same time is necessary for the robot to securely bind the charger to the charging port.
To achieve this goal, a group of engineers created an algorithm that combines robotics with AI technology based on a 3D camera.
The ACR system is designed to perform consistently even in harsh environments.
In addition, the researchers added a safety pole around the robot with a built-in laser sensor that helps it detect fixed and moving obstacles, which can help prevent accidents.
Hyundai expects automatic charging robots to significantly improve the convenience of charging electric vehicles, and in the future, when integrated with autonomous parking management systems, can improve usage efficiency by charging multiple parked cars in a row.
The newly launched ACR will be displayed at the Hyundai Motor booth at the 2023 Seoul Expo, which will be held from March 31 to April 9 at KINTEX (South Korea).
