(ORDO NEWS) — The new four-wheel e-Corner steering system offers side-to-side driving, zero turn and diagonal driving modes. The system could be in cars by 2025.
Hyundai has announced a new car with a steering system that will allow it to move sideways like a crab.
The new e-Corner steering system allows each wheel to turn 90 degrees independently. This is due to the electric motors in the wheel hub containing the steering and suspension system.
Although the new system is currently in development, motorists will be able to purchase a vehicle as early as 2025.
The unique four-wheel steering offers modes such as crab driving, zero turn and diagonal driving.
While driving, the car turns the rear wheels to mimic the angle of the front wheels so they can move diagonally. Experts say this will provide better off-road and parking performance.
With this setup, each wheel turns 90 degrees, making it easier to turn quickly.
At zero turn, the wheels of the car turn 45 degrees, meaning you can rotate 360 degrees.
The South Korean automaker debuted its new Ioniq5 last Wednesday at the 2023 Auto Expo in India. Ioniq5 develops up to 320 horsepower and is equipped with massive 20-inch wheels.
